Yesterday, Apple put on one heck of a show. We got a arrant new adaptation of iOS 7, one big beachcomber of an OS X update, and even a examination of the next Mac Pros. But breadth was all the account about Apple TV? Apple is acutely blank the astronomic abeyant of its set-top-box.

The aisle advanced for Apple TV seems obvious. Open it up to developers. Launch an SDK. Let the millions of coders and developers out there body a behemothic apple of apps for it. Acquisition a way to catechumen those 900 actor iOS apps seamlessly to a flatscreen TV. As a platform, it would be assuredly popular, and added importantly, it could be actually incredible. Appropriate now, Apple TV feels like the company's better absent opportunity.
Indeed, for three years in a row, we've able a column in apprehension of WWDC advertisement of Apple TV apps. And for the third year in a row, we're larboard it drafted, and ourselves disappointed.
Here are a few accessible explanations for why Apple didn't accord us any news—and why they shouldn't stop Apple TV from getting all that it should be.
Apple's aggravating to accumulation from its user-base a bit longerThe simplest account is that Apple has added money to accomplish by befitting aggressive articles belted out of Apple TV. Which makes sense! Why would I hire from iTunes if Amazon Instant Video is about cheaper?
It's not an absurd assumption, and there's some antecedent for Apple boring its anxiety on agreeable expansion. It's got some 500 actor alive iTunes users, and the absorb affluence of money in Apple's ecosystem. Why appearance them greener grass? The aggregation was actually in no blitz to get its alive radio account off the ground, and even if it did it amounted to not abundant added than a Pandora ripoff.
Could Apple be analogously boring its anxiety on alive video in hopes that by befitting the Apple TV closed, iTunes barter will accumulate affairs video and renting movies, rather than subscribing to aggressive services? Possible, except Apple accessible rendered its advantage in this breadth absent balderdash absolution Hulu, Netflix, ESPN and others on to the Apple TV.
And let's not overlook all the iOS video apps and web-based casework like Amazon Instant Video that you can already axle to your Apple TV by application Apple's AirPlay Alive protocol. What's more, just yesterday, the aggregation appear it was authoritative it even easier to mirror your affectation with your Apple TV application bigger abutment for assorted displays in OS X Mavericks. If you wish to attending alfresco of Apple for your video fix on Apple TV, you've already got options. So why not accumulate them?
Games affectation a different user acquaintance problemIt's accessible that Apple is anxious that about the user acquaintance for gaming through the Apple TV. And accomplish no mistake: aperture Apple TV to apps is actually all about games. A television isn't the best way to acquaintance a lot of of the apps you'd use on a phone, tablet, or even a computer. But besides video apps—which are already on the Apple TV—most humans would acceptable be aflame about gaming through Cupertino's box. Like who cares about my Calendar? I wish to play Plants Vs. Zombies!
Playing amateur on a TV, though, about requires some affectionate of distinctively advised controller, which would be an actually new breadth of accouterments development for Apple. Knowing the perfectionists at Apple, a Jony Ive ambassador could be years away. Unless, of course, you about-face the iPad or iPhone into a touchscreen remote.
Apple has bigger affairs for a added fully-featured set-top-boxOf all the possibilities to consider, the a lot of believable seems to be that Apple's affairs are bigger than its accepted palm-sized "hobby." WWDC is the absolute abode to advertise a new developer program—and this year's appointment would've been added appropriate than any added WWDC. The bazaar for STBs has exploded recently, with upstarts cropping up larboard and right—which says annihilation of Microsoft's huge play for buying of the active allowance with the Xbox One's loaded TV features.
